dead.net has a new banner commemorating the 50th anniversary of the band. As part of the banner, there is a countdown that says "147 days." That would take us to NYE 2014 so not to some actual anniversary date. Perhaps a big announcement?

A dream release? Not sure what this would be.

A reunion tour? I hope not.

A reunion NYE gig with cameos from Donna, TC, Bruce and maybe a Jerry hologram and other guests? That would be cool, but only if they linked it to some sort of release. A one night gig doesn't seem like it would be enough of a celebration.

Say I'm old fashion or whatever but i do not feel I'm owed anything now nor when the 50th Year anniversary comes around. All that i could ever imagine has already be given to me by The Good Ole Grateful Dead R.I.P. 8/1995
It has not been nor will ever be The Grateful Dead again since 8/95., the remaining members said that themselves. The Other Ones and The Dead were okay but never measure up to what I consider The Grateful Dead. Now we have our personal and cyber Archives, our friends and memories. Let's continue that vibe with each other, did not Bobby during Jer's wake shared the Jer vibe with us as to say he is still within us, I will never forget him neither. Leave it be, i have been fulfilled in all aspects.

Not sure anyone feels like they are owed anything (unless its free access to all the sbds ever produced, seems like a lot of people think they are owed that because of that Jerry quote about being done with it). The fact that they have a countdown on their website seems to indicate that they are going to do something. Seems to me that if anything we owe it to the band to join their celebration for all the reasons that you mention. I am just curious how they plan to celebrate. I hope its not a tour.

I doubt they would ever call any reunion the Grateful Dead for the reasons you state.

For me, it's primarily about NOT wanting Bob to get his cause he's so snarky...(re; "done with it").

Well, okay; I am not really begrudging them anything they want to do on that front, but, when I was a punk, out there hawking their rep, to anyone and everyone, I believed with all my hear that Jerry wanted me to have them, and Bob wasn't so bad, and...and...

I done grow'd up...but I can still recall--I KNOW it's what made them different, and of course, BETTER. So, if that's no longer the case, I dunno, you know?

;)

Bob's "see ya" comment was regrettable, but as was pointed out last week, that was almost 9 years ago and perhaps its time to let it go.

I do purchase a fair share of the releases, in part, because of all the reasons you elude to. This band has been more than generous with its fan base. Way more generous than any other band and they continue to do so. As Pig Street! says, i don't think they owe us anything. I'm okay with them selling what is a fraction of their catalog, there is still so much more to listen to for free.

Could be one of those big-screen streams all over the world at the same time, like FIFA Brazil or the MetOperaNet.
Local theatre owners could do free shows.
Drive-ins could stream it, like the drive-in in Elko, MN (not NEV) that features up&coming NASCAR greats, a BBQ, and then does a flick on the giant screen, with nice upgraded digital sound
Bars could see if the dish might pick it up that night.
Campers could tune in on their hand-powered REI radios.
The possibilities are endless...

Or maybe there's a big M & A in the works, and this is actually an internal HR count-down for the big move to new headquarters in Dublin. One of those "Ah %#@%" moments where ya weren't completely focused when posting.

Oh...uh, never mind; I thought this was the date when we can search on all my posts...

;)

Like BD told me, it's perhaps best that some things ARE deleted, and if Monte stops complaining about it, we will proaly all be better off, eh?

I think it's 147 days until the Brett Favre retirement ceremony at which he dons the jersey and takes the field again....

Here's 'reply no. 2' - "Attacks on science deny truth, proven research" is a new soapbox in The Coloradoan. It's written by a guy like you who lives in my town.

A countdown until the 50th year begins?

Maybe it's an internal memo, accidentally released. X many days to figure out how to commemorate the 50th year.

50 years ... holy moly ... 50 years before '65 was the first full year of WWI.

If I recall correctly, isn't this the last year that Rhino has control of the vault? I haven't seen or heard anything about what's happening after their "10yr lease" was up. I'm tending towards what others are saying about it being some major release, or, maybe it's what we've ALL been waiting for---being able to download shows from a central GDP source (for a price). But, I also think that it should be something that IS AFFORDABLE to the vast majority of us, and not some major f'up like the Fillmore '69 release where far too few were released & now all you can do is pay WAY TOO MUCH for it on Ebay, or, try to find someone to send you copies.

There's definitely precedent for this (the technology exists now and multiple bands are doing something similar). Agree about the price issue, but don't know how they'd pull this off in anything like a timely fashion since they'd need to remaster so much of so many things for our aging ears.

I would hope that whatever "it" is would be widely accessible and affordable as to encourage broad participation. This, imo, would not be the time to offer an ultra-exclusive package or event that few can attend or afford.

50 years...it's about the music, the artists and the fans. There is much to celebrate.

They seem to be getting that. First with the E72 box by releasing the individual shows after the box, then with the multiple options on the SSDD box and now with the Spring '90 TOO box they released what is arguably the most desired show of the lot as an individual show.

You're all off.

I hear it's a countdown until Phil passes his next stone.

Well, perhaps that WOULD be deserving of a commemorative release...
